Entertainment and culture return to downtown El Cajon
The Magnolia is located at 210 E. Main Street in downtown El Cajon, adjacent to City Hall. Originally built and operated as the East County Performing Arts Center, the venue had been closed for roughly ten years following recession-driven city budget cuts. The extended closure reflected financial pressures that significantly affected local government funding for cultural programs. In 2018, renovation work began on the $6.3 million project, funded primarily through the strategic sale of the former El Cajon Police Department building on Fletcher Parkway.
From closure to reopening
The renovation work converted the old control room into a VIP lounge, installed a new elevator to replace a former chairlift, added a new lobby bar, updated HVAC systems, and added plush front-row seating. The exterior underwent minimal modifications. The renovated venue operates as a City-owned entertainment space in partnership with Live Nation Entertainment and House of Blues Entertainment. The project brought the venue to an approximate capacity of 1,300 seats, making it a significant venue for touring performers.
The Magnolia now hosts touring entertainment across multiple genres, including rock, comedy, Latin, dance, and theatrical performances, drawing audiences from throughout the region. Attending a show
General parking is complimentary and first-come, first-served at 233 Magnolia Avenue. Premier paid parking is available on the east side at 210 E. Main Street. Rideshare drop-off is at Rea Avenue and Sulzfeld Way. The venue warns against parking in the Courtyard Marriott lot, which frequently tows vehicles from its lot.
Inside, The Magnolia features the Flora Lounge with elevated views, a private bar, and complimentary popcorn for patrons. An outdoor Plaza Party area opens thirty minutes before doors open to the public and provides diverse food and beverage vendors for attendees. The venue's box office hours extend to two hours before showtime on performance days, providing ample opportunity to arrange tickets and preferred seating.
