El Cajon, San Diego County
El Cajon is home to one of the largest Iraqi communities in the United States, many of them Chaldean Christians who began arriving in the 1970s and came in greater numbers after 2003. Arabic and Aramaic are heard along Main Street, where bakeries, markets and restaurants serve the community. The city name is Spanish for the box, a reference to the valley ringed by hills.
